A quite common stiff, knotty bush with small leaves which are shiny on both sides. The leaves are about twice as long as broad and pointed. The previous year's withered leaves are frequently present. The shoots are initially downy.
They like wet rocky habitats and grow up to 1300m.
They are dioecious and the catkins are 3-5cm long and purplish. The catkins appear with the leaves.
