A common shrub found throughout the mountains to 1600m, often higher.
It is a creeping plant and roots from the stem as well as producing seeds. The 3cm catkins are borne with the leaves on long stalks once snow has melted in June or as late as July. They are insect pollinated.
The 3cm broad leaves are rounded and have a prominent network of veins above and below.
