Storsmeden is best ascended from Rondvassbu. During the high season, around Easter and the high summer, the whole lodge is open. During the rest of the year there is a self service cabin available, for which a DNT key is needed to open. For access to Rondvassbu Lodge see the general Rondane section.
It is also possible to climb Storsmeden and then traverse the arête to Veslesmeden, however this traverse is plagued by loose rock. Despite the loose rock it is an obvious route and I have described this route on the Veslesmeden page. Apparently a large and dangerous cornice builds up in the saddle between Steet and Storsmeden, often on both sides, making access to this saddle difficult in the winter and spring. As such a winter ascent of Storsmeden is not recommended unless it is undertaken by extremely experienced groups.
