Hestdalshøgdi can be climbed either on skis in the spring or as a walk in the summer. During the summer it can be climbed from Tundradalen, but there is 10 km of private toll road from Dønfoss to Tundradalssætri. From Lundadalen it can be climbed in the spring or summer and this is therefore the route I describe. There is a toll toad that goes up Lundadalen for six km to Heimste Lundadalssætri from Ottadalen. To get to this toll road head towards Bismo from either direction. Just before the main road crosses over to the north side of the Otta River and enters Bismo is a turn off to Lundagrendi. Take this road to Lundagrendi for about 2 ½ km until you see a signpost for Lundadalen. Follow this gravel road south past the toll boom and gravel quarry. In the spring, and up to early May, this road will still be blocked after one km, at the gravel quarry, by snow patches. If it is blocked it will be necessary to walk/ski the remaining five km to Heimste Lundadalssætri which will add 10 km and 2 hours to the overall time. I shall describe the summer walking route which the ski route largely follows, but where necessary make some observations regarding to a ski ascent.
