There is a very simple route up Store Steindalsnosi via the north west ridge and this is described below in the main section. There is another, but seldom used and unmarked, route up from Steindalen from the south. This route is rough but is useful if you want to combine Store Steindalsnosi and Fannaråken, and is described below.
The North West Ridge Route
To reach Steindalen leave Turtagrø hotel and head up Helgedalen to the Ekrehytta as if you were going up Fannaråken.
Continue to climb past Ekrehytta on the marked path to Fannaråken up past a steeper section for 3/4 hour until the gradient levels out and you are some 100 metres above the Steindalen valley floor which lies steeply down to the west. This is described in more detail on the Fannaråken page.
Leave the path here, which continues up Fannaråken, and traverse across the mixed vegetation, slab and stone slopes in a northerly direction into Steindalen itself. Keep on the bearing, trying not to lose height until the river comes up to meet you about a 3/4 km into the valley.
The terrain now begins to be dominated by stones. Continue up the stony valley for another ½ km and cross over the submerged river to reach the north side. From here there is a wide bowl which leads steeply up to a saddle on the main ridge above.
Clamber up the rocks and stones of the steep bowl for a good ½ hour to reach the saddle and a rewarding view to Breheimen in the north west.
From the saddle it is a pleasant km walk to the north east across a shallow slope to reach the summit.
From Turtagrø allow 4 hours to the summit of which 2 hours is after leaving the path above the Ekrehytta. Return by the same route or descend the north west ridge as described below.
The Route From Steindalen
It is also possible to continue further up the Steindalen valley to the saddle between Steindalsnosi and Fanaråken.
At this saddle an open view over the Huge Fanaråkbreen glacier, which incidentally is a superb ski descent in the spring down to Sognefjellshytta lodge.
From this saddle the is a steep scramble up the boulders on the ridge to the north for 100m ascent to gain a more gentle but still stony ridge.
This more gentle ridge can be veers north west fro a ½ km to reach the summit.
