Nyctea scandiaca, Snowy Owl, Snøugle. 60cm.
A very rare resident of open mountainous moorland above the tree line.
Although resident they are are nomadic.They nest on the ground atop a hummock on rocky outcrops. During breeding the female is fed on the nest by the male.
They subsist primarily on lemmings and in poor lemming years will not breed. The females are slightly larger and darker than the males, which are white.
