A very rare resident in the wooded valleys around the mountains.
They nest on sheltered ledges, crevices or caves on crags and in hollow trees, preferably in a rocky wooded ravine.
They hunt at night in more open areas, with prey being small to medium mammals, sometimes up to the size of foxes and young roe deer, and a wide range of birds, including other birds of prey, up to goshawks.
The female is larger.
