Tetrao urogallus, Capercaillie, Storfugl. 75cm.

Capercaillie
An uncommon resident in the pine forests in the valleys surrounding the mountains.

As with the black grouse the males lek in the spring, then the females nest on the ground and are solely responsible for the rearing. The males can be aggressive during this lek.

They eat the shoots and buds of pine trees and also berries and seeds from many plants. The much smaller females are brown.
