Arboreal in nature, they are mostly found in deciduous and mixed forests where there is significant undergrowth. They build a cuplike nest of grasses in bushes.
They feed off insects and larvae but also consume most berries when available. The female has a brown, not black, cap.
Their song is considered to one of the most beautiful of all birdsong.
