Black-throated Diver
A summer visitor to high moorland lakes at, or above, the tree line.

They prefer to nest on an island or skerry. The nest is a spartan mound of available vegetation. They feed on fish, for which they can dive up to two minutes. They tend to occupy larger lakes than the red-throated diver.

The sexes are alike and have a black throat in the summer only. In the winter the plumage is plainer.
