An uncommon resident in the forested valleys around the mountains, especially the higher birch forests with clearings.
The males lek in spring and then the females nest on the ground hidden among vegetation. The males do not help with the young.
They eat buds and shoots and also a wide variety of berries. The larger males are black but the females are a grey brown colour.
