Populus tremula, Aspen, Osp. 20m.

Aspen
A widespread tree in the Scandinavian valleys, it is found up to 850m, where it may be just a shrub. They are not shade tolerant.

Male and female trees are separate and both bear catkins in May. The fertilized female catkins mature in early summer and the seeds are wind dispersed. They sucker readily from roots, making copses of the same sex.

The fluttering leaves turn a warm red in the autumn.
